Major cultural platforms:

  • The 'Concertgebouw' (Concert Hall) (Zand Square)
This building is inseparably linked with the 'European City of Culture of 2002' project. The design criteria for the concert hall are related to openness and adventure, innovation and modern image, but also to functionality. An eye-catching feature is the so-called 'Lantern Tower', which is slightly seperate from the main volume and overlooks the Zand Square. In this tower is a chamber music hall with 300 seats. In the actual concert building the large auditorium seats 1300. Top quality attractions in the area of classical music, jazz, musical theatre, visual arts, ... take place yearround. For more details regarding programmes and on-line ticketing, click through to the website of the Concertgebouw.
  • The 'Stadsschouwburg' (City Theatre) (Vlamingstraat)
The neo-Renaissance theatre was built in 1868 and was recently completely renovated. A unique historical decor inside.
The statue in front of the theatre represents Papageno, the cheerful bird-fancier from Mozart's opera 'The Magic Flute'. Opposite, across the street is a copper-engraved score from the same opera.
  • The 'Werf'
Small theatre regularly scheduling jazz concerts
